How Your Sleeping Position Affects Your Health

Posted on

You already know the importance of a good night’s sleep. However, did you know that your sleeping position affects your health? See how your favorite sleeping position can affect your health.

Sleep on your back

Some studies have shown that sleeping on your back increases the risk of developing sleep apnea. However, it seems to be more associated with people with other risk factors for the disease, such as being overweight and having trouble waking from sleep. If you sleep on your back and wake up calm and symptom-free, your sleeping position is probably right for you.

Sleep on your side

Good news for side sleepers; This position is not associated with many health problems. In fact, this is a great position to avoid neck and back pain. If you sleep on your side and suffer from frequent neck and upper back pain, you may need an extra pillow or mattress. Sleeping on the left side is beneficial for those who suffer from frequent heartburn.

Sleep on your stomach

Unfortunately, sleeping on your stomach is the worst sleeping position. Some studies show that sleeping on your stomach can improve digestion and prevent sleep apnea, but it can also cause many spinal problems. This puts additional pressure on the lower back and causes the neck to rotate at an unnatural angle for too many hours. The problem is that you can’t sleep on your stomach with your head down (like a massage table), so turning your head to either side puts your back at risk.

Sleep with your partner

If you sleep with someone, it can affect your health for better or worse. Those who slept with snorers had a harder time falling into deep sleep. On the other hand, those who slept with someone and enjoyed cuddling before bed were happier and had stronger relationships.

Sleep is not the only thing that is important for health. It is also important to pay attention to the position in the dream. Side sleepers sleep well and have the most health benefits, while stomach sleepers have the most disadvantages.
